The Knee AirBag (KAB) relies on a gas generator to produce the high-pressure gas required for its activation. When a vehicle collides during operation, the acceleration sensor integrated in the generator detects the peak acceleration signal and duration of action upon impact—i.e., the magnitude of the collision energy. Based on this energy magnitude, the sensor automatically determines whether activation is necessary. If the collision energy meets the activation threshold, the sensor outputs an activation signal, which releases the firing pin, sequentially igniting the stab primer and booster cup assembly. The combustion of the booster cup assembly then ignites the propellant cartridge assembly, which instantly generates high-pressure gas. This gas is discharged through the baffle plate and filter screen, inflating the airbag and rupturing the trim cover. The airbag rapidly deploys in the occupant’s knee area to protect their safety.
