The curtain airbag (CAB) covers the upper portion of the vehicle's interior side panels, providing protection for the heads of all occupants seated near the side in the event of a side-impact collision or rollover accident.
The curtain airbag is positioned along the roof rail above the car doors. Depending on the vehicle’s structure, the coverage area of the curtain airbag can extend from the A-pillar to the C-pillar or even from the A-pillar to the D-pillar. The gas generator can either be installed in the middle of the curtain airbag (closer to the B-pillar) or placed toward the rear end (near the C- or D-pillar).
When the ignition signal is received, the curtain airbag can inflate within 25 milliseconds, protecting occupants from impacts with external hard objects and significantly reducing head injury metrics. According to experimental data, deploying the curtain airbag can lower the occupant’s HIC value by up to 90.4%.
